From January 13 through February 26, 2022, Couse-Sharp Historic Site (CSHS) is proud to present a substantial exhibition of graphic media focusing on northern New Mexico, most never before seen by the public. Glimpses of the Past: Historic New Mexico Prints, 1880–1950 encompasses a variety of techniques ranging from etching and lithography to woodblock printing, linocut, aquatint, serigraphy and monotype.

Entrance view of Glimpses of the Past from the door of the Luna Chapel, where it was exhibited in 2021. The show is now in The Lunder Research Center’s Dean Porter Gallery, which was originally the home of Taos Society of Artists founding member Joseph Henry Sharp.

Stylistically diverse, the exhibition focuses on the work of artists who, as CSHS Executive Director and Curator Davison Koenig notes, often are “lost to history, though their artwork is of high quality and provides a fascinating look into days gone by.”

Glimpses of the Past was installed in the 1830s Luna Family Chapel at CSHS,
which was Sharp’s first painting studio in Taos.

“We’ve included work by artists who will be familiar to many, but the primary focus is on the work of lesser-known printmakers who worked in New Mexico for a few years, for a season, or even only for a few days.”

While Glimpses of the Past includes artists who many might recognize, the exhibition also reveals that numerous artists that viewers might be unfamiliar with found similar inspiration in the New Mexican landscape and vibrant cultural communities of the region, especially those of Santa Fe and Taos.
